The season of Advent is almost here! It’s that beautiful, reflective time of year that leads us into the true spirit of Christmas. Unlike the busyness of holiday shopping or endless to-do lists, Advent is an invitation to slow down, to anticipate, and to prepare our hearts for the arrival of Christ.
What is Advent?
Advent is a four-week season beginning on the fourth Sunday before Christmas, which this year starts on December 1. It marks the beginning of the liturgical year for the Church—a fresh spiritual start for all of us. The word Advent itself means "coming" or "arrival," reminding us that this is a time to prepare for the coming of Jesus, both as a remembrance of His birth and in hopeful anticipation of His return.
Why is Advent Important?
Advent helps us focus on the profound meaning of Christmas. In our world, it’s easy to get swept up in the commercial side of the holiday season, but Advent invites us to center our attention on the gift of God becoming man. It’s a call to quiet our minds and focus on the transformative love and peace that Christ brings.
How Can We Celebrate Advent?
1. Create an Advent Wreath.
One of the most cherished Advent traditions is the Advent wreath. It’s made of evergreen branches with four candles—three purple and one rose. Each Sunday of Advent, we light a new candle, symbolizing the growing light of Christ’s presence in the world. The rose candle, lit on the third Sunday (Gaudete Sunday), represents joy.
2. Reflect and Prepare.
Take a few minutes each day for personal reflection or prayer. This could mean reading a Scripture passage, praying the Rosary, or simply sitting quietly with a devotional. Dedicate this time to preparing your heart for Christmas.
3. Practice Acts of Kindness.
During Advent, we’re called to reflect Christ’s love in our actions. Small acts of kindness—like offering a meal to someone in need, reaching out to a friend who could use support, or simply showing more patience and compassion—are beautiful ways to embody the spirit of Advent.
4. Start a Family Tradition.
Make Advent a special time in your home by starting a family tradition. You could read a short daily reflection together, create an Advent calendar with meaningful activities, or prepare a special “waiting for Christmas” meal each Sunday evening.
A Season of Hope and Joy
This Advent, may we all find moments of peace, hope, and joy as we wait and prepare for the coming of Christ. Let’s open our hearts to receive the gift of Jesus, who brings true light and love to the world. Embrace the season with intentionality, and let it fill you with the anticipation and wonder that Christmas truly holds.
So, take a deep breath, light a candle, and savor this season of waiting. The celebration of Christmas is all the richer when we prepare our hearts in hope.
